graveyard part five

hunter's game the graveyard

You wake up in an unfamiliar cabin.

At first, it almost seems like you're in an entirely different place and that everything had been just a dream. The interior of the cabin looks nothing like the run-down, old-timey shacks that you had been living in before. Everything in here is sleek and modern, from the enormous flat-screen TV mounted on the wall to the fridge and mini-bars stocked with all your favorite foods. There aren't any individual rooms in here, just a common area large enough to house everyone comfortably, no matter how many more people join you...and there will be plenty more people joining you before the week is over.

Because if you look outside the window, it quickly becomes clear that not only are you still in Prayer's Pass, but that you are no longer among the realm of the living. Judging from the tombstones directly outside, you're now in what had been the abandoned broken-down cabin in the graveyard. The cabin's not all that changed; the world outside has gone completely grey and everything you see appears to be faded and blurry. The only things that remain sharp and in color are what's inside the cabin, including your fellow ghosts. Occasionally, people who are still alive may enter, but it's clear that what they're seeing is completely different from what you're seeing. The door's unlocked; however, a mysterious force prevents you from stepping beyond the threshold, no matter how hard you may try. After all, this cabin is a cage for the dead - a gilded one, perhaps, but a cage nonetheless.

On the flat-screen TV plays everything that is currently happening in the town. It will shut off once night starts...and something else will appear instead.

(The graveyard so far)

It's true, I would have at least let him get out whatever touching last words he may have had. [shakes head sadly as he imagines what could have been] And I quite agree. The game wouldn't have been nearly as fun if I'd been forced to partner with someone else, especially considering the poor choices among the prey.

I'm flattered you think that way! Though I should hope I'm not boring any way.

I'd imagine you would know how to make a death memorable. It's a shame he had to go in such a terribly dull way twice. [consoling arm pat... MAYBE NEXT TIME.] Isn't that so? Imagine if we had been the ones stuck aiding Holden. ...You know, thinking of it that way, even if we were on the wrong team that turned out to be the best part of the entire game.

[a smile!] Oh, you aren't, not in the least. In fact, could I trade Ciel in for you as a permanent travel partner?

Isn't it just? I could have at least made his corpse a little more aesthetically pleasing.

[laughs quietly] Now that I think about it, you and I were one of the few who came into this game together and stayed that way throughout, weren't we? Even Ciel came into doubt for a while there. I believe the only other two who can attest to that record are Lithuania and Ukraine, and she had the ability to clear him so I think our little partnership still has them beat.

I'd be honored, of course. Though I'm afraid my baking skills aren't nearly as up to par. Still, we may as well save on travel expenses as we'll no doubt wind up in the next creepy town together again.

I'm sure he'll appreciate the sentiment if nothing else.

Ah, that is true, isn't it? I hadn't paid it enough mind to make note but that's something quite impressive with the odds stacked the way they've been, wouldn't you say? Why, I'd go so far as to say it's the work of destiny. [SAID IN THE MOST HAMMY WAY, complete with dramatically clasping his hands together in front of his chest.] —Or a rare stroke of good luck; equally feasible, that. I'm a little impressed, my luck is usually wretched.

I'll stock up on baked goods ahead of time, then. I can't say I'm looking forward to winding up in more of these miserable towns but at least the company won't be bad.

[bats his lashes] My, it seems that our fates are so deeply entwined that not even Critter can break our bonds. Clearly, no one else here shares a relationship as deep and meaningful as ours. Or perhaps my generally decent luck managed to counterbalance yours.

I wonder what the next one will be like? I would say that surely it can't get worse, except this one was actually fairly entertaining up until the point the prey decided to stop doing anything.

We could truly be a Shakespearean inspiration, you and I. We've all of the class and finesse with none of the idiocy of our Romeos or the madness of our Ophelias. [no they've got the cray BUT WHATEVER details...] At this rate we may even be able to compete with the nations. [NODS] Anyway, that's all the more reason for us to travel together. I'd like a break from my foul luck every now and then and if you've enough to spare, you ought to share the wealth.

As for that, the pattern I've seen so far seems to generally indicate a downhill spiral. Who knows? Perhaps the next one will be just this all day every day, with no way to escape. Death by monotony.
