graveyard part 4

hunter's game the graveyard

You wake up in an unfamiliar cabin.

At first, it almost seems like you're in an entirely different place and that everything had been just a dream. The interior of the cabin looks nothing like the run-down, old-timey shacks that you had been living in before. Everything in here is sleek and modern, from the enormous flat-screen TV mounted on the wall to the fridge and mini-bars stocked with all your favorite foods. There aren't any individual rooms in here, just a common area large enough to house everyone comfortably, no matter how many more people join you...and there will be plenty more people joining you before the week is over.

Because if you look outside the window, it quickly becomes clear that not only are you still in Prayer's Pass, but that you are no longer among the realm of the living. Judging from the tombstones directly outside, you're now in what had been the abandoned broken-down cabin in the graveyard. The cabin's not all that changed; the world outside has gone completely grey and everything you see appears to be faded and blurry. The only things that remain sharp and in color are what's inside the cabin, including your fellow ghosts. Occasionally, people who are still alive may enter, but it's clear that what they're seeing is completely different from what you're seeing. The door's unlocked; however, a mysterious force prevents you from stepping beyond the threshold, no matter how hard you may try. After all, this cabin is a cage for the dead - a gilded one, perhaps, but a cage nonetheless.

On the flat-screen TV plays everything that is currently happening in the town. It will shut off once night starts...and something else will appear instead.

It's not too late. Thanks to you and Lithuania, we might have just enough time to give it all to them...

But then it's up to them.

( still... she seems to have faith in them )

It's all gonna depend on the Defender, I think. If there aren't any guns around, then they'll have to use at least two trials fair and square. If there are...

Well, I'll be biting my nails, that's for sure.

I don't think they're foolish enough to let Miss Maizono live.

The real test will be whether or not Charles is able to make use of the role he received from Elliot before he dies...

( as much as she hates to say it... both because it means mentioning Elliot and because it could be painful to their team if he can )

Yeah, we don't have Naegi around anymore, so really we can just trust Ms. Carter. And... I don't think Charles will be a threat, at least not in that way - I'm not sure about the notes he's passing out - but I don't think he'll be able to pull that trick off. You see... Mayu has this role. She's the striker, she can block a role once in the game. So I think she could stop him like that, and it seems pretty likely now's the time. She was acting like a good sport about the whole matter of the game when I saw her at the last meeting. [Which... is his last meeting, weh. Sure, they were stressful as all get out, but given what it means? He'd go back if he could.] She did throw me under the bus at the trial, and I'll admit I'm a little sore about that, but it made her look much better.

Ah! So even if he tries to sacrifice his already dying self... he wouldn't be able to if she blocks him.

( WELL THAT'S GOOD NEWS -- even if it means that he's definitely going to be joining them here tomorrow )

Ah... she didn't tell anyone did she? Because if he found out and told someone, along with his plans to protect Miss Maizono... that would definitely incriminate her.

( ...LOOK WHO'S FINALLY THINKING PESSIMISTICALLY FOR ONCE... thanks Charles, she must have caught that disease from you )

That possibility aside, it does improve our chances...

I think... I think she was gonna try and claim the same role but as a scavenger thing. And I think there's a way out... Ms. Carter is out of poisonings, you know. So... if nobody is poisoned in the morning... and she says "Oh, I stopped anyone from gettin' poisoned..."

Hell, she might even throw Ms. Carter under the bus in the process - say she figured out she's the viper. That would add a lot of credibility to her claim.

...you're right. We just need to keep believing in them both.

[Tipping his soda in her direction.] Here's to them.

[sip!]
