night nine; hunters

Once again, as everyone remains locked inside with a raging blizzard outside, you awake at 11 PM precisely to find the door from your cabin open.

Outside, despite the sounds of a blizzard and the whiteout blocking the views from your window, the world is still and calm. The ground and trees are blanketed in thick snow, but no snow is falling and the wind is no longer blowing.

You're all familiar now with what awaits you in the clearing behind the woods, near the caves at the base of the mountain. Still, even if you thought to resist, you are unable to disobey the call that brings you to where your fellow hunters gather.

Several of the trees nearby have long pieces of parchment nailed to them. In case you'd somehow forgotten, the rules you are bound by are nailed there:
You are a hunter. Your role is to devour prey.

→ In this game, there are hunters, prey, and scavengers. Everyone here is a hunter, and everyone else is either prey or scavenger.
→ Every night, the hunters will meet and pick someone to kill. Then, a few lucky hunters will get to kill the prey themselves!
→ The next day, everyone will get together. The prey will try to find out who the hunters are!
→ At the end of the day, there will be a trial, and one player will be chosen. Whoever is chosen will be executed!
→ The hunters will win if they outnumber the other players or kill all of the prey!
→ Be careful and be smart! Don't let the prey know who you are, and try to make other prey look suspicious! Remember that some prey is dangerous to you. They might have special abilities that will help them find out who you are!
→ Always keep in mind the scavengers, too. Some of them may just be hunting YOU!

As a hunter, you have particular incentives.

→ In this game, the only ones guaranteed to live are those still standing at the end.
→ If the prey win, all of the hunters will be killed.
→ If the hunters win, the survivors can make a request. If you request all the dead to return to life, all players will leave this place unharmed.
→ The only way to guarantee everyone leaves here alive is for the hunters to kill the prey and win the game!

As hunters, you are sworn to secrecy.

→ You may not tell prey or scavengers about your incentives. You may not hint to anyone about your incentives. You may not try to help them figure it out.
→ If you are found out as a hunter, you may tell prey you were bribed or threatened. You cannot tell them about the special rules or that anyone can come back to life.
→ You may not help prey or scavengers. You may not assist them in any way. You may not attempt to throw the game. You may not reveal your fellow hunters.

→ If a hunter helps the prey or reveals the hunters' incentives, that prey will be killed. There will also be consequences for the hunters.
→ If the betrayal was intentional and serious, at the end of the game, none of the dead will be revived.
→ Otherwise, if there was a betrayal, at the end of the game the dead prey will be revived, but the dead hunters will remain dead.

As a hunter, you had a choice to play.

→ All of you agreed to be here.
→ All of you are bound by these rules.
→ All of you betray your own lives and the lives of the other players if you break them.

I've spoken to Spain several times already. His trust in Lithuania is unshakeable, and the latter was working closely with Ukraine.

He's hiding more than what he's telling. If I'd been Ukraine, he'd have been my first choice.

[her shoulders slump, however] But I have no concrete proof that's what happened, only assumptions.

Before he gets to conspire with Spain even more, as well.

[she bites her lip, remembering something else]

Ciel, Charles, and Joshua are others Lithuania had mentioned cooperating with. He let that slip in a friendly invitation to help him with England's trial.

He needs to go before he spreads any further.

[personal profile] construe 2013-05-29 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
If we kill him, it will force the others to come forward- including a possible new watcher identity, as well. Tonight is an easy choice. We leave Ciel alone, as she's setting herself up to take the fall for me, should the prey remain unconvinced that Naegi was the convert... As for Joshua and Charles, it is obvious that they are conspiring with her. If they're intelligent they'll suspect her, too.

Is there any chance America would shield Lithuania tonight?

I highly doubt America would think that far ahead. He shielded Miss Fukawa out of *guilt*, but threw an innocent child out to the wolves...

Unless Lithuania specifically asked him to, which would be the only instance. Lithuania was rather unconcerned for his life. I wonder if its knowing America would protect him is what makes him so confident.

What I do know is that we nations haven't been meeting as a group for a while. Spain met with me separately, which left d America's private meeting to be with Lithuania.

Going by his outburst at the execution earlier today, I will hazard he will keep protecting himself.

America is not playing to win at this point. He's not going to protect those important to the game.

And Lithuania did vote for England, which may be the nail in his coffin. It's worth the risk.

So... do any of us have backup plans for if we get watched? Because apparently there's a good risk we'll have a lookout running around until the game is over, and like we saw with Naegi today the prey will follow that like sheep. Kirigiri can get away with being out for now, and maybe even Ada if Ciel believes in her being the bloodhound really hard. Me and Prussia and Sharon, though, get watched without an alibi for being out and we're all toast.

We'll have to come up with a pretty convincing lie that's not role based; an incident branching from an existing role.

That's... [Skeptical.] Well, that's not completely disprovable... What actually happens to them is they get a visit from Critter in the morning. So it's... sort of plausible...

Got all the same caveats as the original fake poison plan, of course.

( Ada is... painfully quiet. She was the one who was supposed to die... not anyone else. She was tired of living while her other allies were killed instead. )

...so we have to try and find whomever she passed her role to while trying to shield ourselves from suspect. If we don't draw too much attention to ourselves that we might be investigated, perhaps we can buy time until we can find them...

( her spirit is so low right now that it's hard to plan with optimism... at least, until after she asks Critter to grant her an early up and it's granted. then her face lights up like a Christmas tree )

But tonight, regardless, I'm going to leave the remaining players a message. I'm hoping that it will stir up a little chaos amongst the prey~ It might just take something a little crazy to turn things around.

[Ada... Holden knows exactly how she feels. Though he doesn't want to admit it - he does like Ada and all - he'd really believed her last night about being the last hunter they'd need to see lynched.]

Crazy is right. We basically need a goddamn miracle at this point. What we really need to think of is, if we were prey, who would we want to lynch?

Besides America, I mean.

I'm going to leave them a special message....

( she has nothing more than death to fear and even that has eluded her thus far )

But if another of us is accused of neing active... perhaps that would be a time to consider faking the poison as a reason for nightly activity..... hmmm... I wish there was a better excuse though.....

Re: discussion

[personal profile] goddamnphonies 2013-05-30 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Hrm, best excuse would be, the Hunters tried to kill us and we were out in the woods and all but we got saved. America wouldn't save any of us, though, and we'd have to not kill someone for that to actually work, so that plan's bust.
purethingsonly: (does not understand)

[personal profile] purethingsonly 2013-05-30 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
...and that would be the only way to claim that the one of us was saved isn't it?

( she sighs )

It would be nice if we could convince them that there is a role remaining that allows an accomplice... a second person to be active. Do you remember... Miss Sayaka... the rabid. She had an 'accomplice' that we were allowed to kill at the same time.

But the only one we could perhaps do that with is that of our 'Protector', Miss Kirigiri... ( she's just spouting thoughts now regardless of how dumb or impossible she thinks they are )

[personal profile] goddamnphonies 2013-05-30 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
It could work... call her the sheriff and then her sidekick's the deputy or something. But... Arya still had accomplice listed as a role so it'd probably count as one of the eight. Apparently darn Ukraine had a list of all eight of them. Which is the pits for us.

Anyone got ideas on Nightray's mystery role yet?
agentx13: (a: not having a good time)

[personal profile] agentx13 2013-05-30 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
It might have been the lookout role, and Critter decided to keep it as a rolling... role.

[personal profile] goddamnphonies 2013-05-30 04:10 am (UTC)(link)

[personal profile] purethingsonly 2013-05-30 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
That's good for Miss Kirigiri at least. ( she blinks ) But then... we... might have been able to use that against them if Mister Naegi hadn't suddenly claimed to be the convert. ( she shakes her head ) It's impossible..

Well whoever it was, they are doing a good job of not standing out. It seems like someone who's either not intending to use it, or perhaps something very limited that has kept them quiet this far.

[personal profile] goddamnphonies 2013-05-30 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Not intending to use it is pretty plausible; we know how America was. I still got this theory that... it's like Syo made up, you have to die to use it or something.

That was just irresponsible as hell of him! It covers Kirigiri, but... how the hell are we supposed to lynch Ciel now? It's a much harder sell for her to be a hunter from the get go.
purethingsonly: (huhwhut)

[personal profile] purethingsonly 2013-05-30 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
What do we know so far... there's the Protector - Miss Kirigiri, then we have the Defender - Miss Maizono, the Doctor, the Dove, to...

( she pauses at that point to pull out a paper and start scribbling something down. she blinks. )

I wonder if it's only a coincidence but... we have the protector, defender, doctor, and the dove... all which seem to be protective roles for the prey. Then we have the deerhound, the bloodhound and the lookout which we know and one we don't. And yet the deerhound, bloodhound and the lookout are all roles meant to detect a person's status. I wonder if maybe there's a second type of lookout, not unlike our hounds. It would even out the roles if you looked at it that way.

[personal profile] goddamnphonies 2013-05-30 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe... [He sounds a little skeptical.] Like someone who can find out who a person was with? But... hmm, if it's like that then they're almost definitely on the down-low like Rapunzel was.
purethingsonly: (fidget)

[personal profile] purethingsonly 2013-05-30 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Tight, that seems silly... No. If the Lookout can pass their ability on, then I don't think Critter would waste a role on a second type of watcher...

Well... the only other way I can think of it is... their roles thus far have seemed somewhat fitting of their character. At least America's did before he... ( lost it, basically). And Miss Kirigiri and Miss Maizono as well. They both seem very fitted to their roles. Luke too...

Maybe the most likely reason it hasn't been used is that it's like Luke's, and that they would have to die to use it.

( she lowers her head ) Elliot was the kind of person who always fights for people, whether he likes them or not. I think a role like that would have suited him. ( she chuckles sadly ) But if he did, I wouldn't have wanted him to use something like that. But that would explain the person's reluctance. So I think it's either like that - or something like Miss Sharon's ability, which has a limited number of uses.

[personal profile] goddamnphonies 2013-05-30 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
If it suits someone's character... it'd probably be Madoka out of everyone left, she'd said she wished she had Luke's role. [He takes a low, shaky exhale.] But not only is that complete conjecture, it means it'd somehow be good for the prey if she died - and if she's different from Luke it'd probably be the reverse, make a night kill worse than during the day. And Kirigiri thought it was likely she was just prey because of how much [choke, mispronunciation] Sayaka shook her up.

You know, it's kind of funny, I can't think of any prey but Rapunzel who came here alone, who had a role. Do you think that means it's more or less likely number eight's in one of the groups? Hrrrm, maybe we should just look over the tapes and see who started acting really different right after the role got redistributed...
purethingsonly: (I've got darkness and fears to appease)

[personal profile] purethingsonly 2013-05-30 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Think about it. Critter sees this all as a game. You would think that for the sake of the game, he would give the roles to someone he thinks will use it. ( twisted way of thinking about it but it fits Critter ) Madoka might be one to investigate... otherwise, I think looking back at the tapes and seeing if anyone stands out on day four, when it was redistributed.

[personal profile] goddamnphonies 2013-05-30 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It sure does... think about how poor Miss Skye played out her deerhound role, she really fit the part. Hmm... maybe there's antivenom? But that's probably covered by the Doctor.

Ada-san. I have something for you.

[ Kirigiri is holding out a gun. ]

Please, take it. I need to be honest with you: the probability of you getting caught soon is very high. Should the trial turn against you, what I want you to do is, if you can... right before the results are announced...

Shoot someone. Take one of the prey out with you. Make it someone important- America, or Lithuania. I know it's a lot to ask of you... but if it comes down to you being voted for... You shouldn't have to die in vain.

[ ... ] If Maizono-san wonders how you got the gun, I'll tell her that I was a fool that trusted your bloodhound claim, and passed it to you...

[ There's also a slip of paper that accompanies the gun with the following words:

"Someone special's given you a gun, oh boy! This gun is super-duper easy to use! Just aim and fire at whoever it is you want to shoot, and it'll kill them every time. There's only one bullet, so be smart about who you're pointing it at! Your gun can't be used against any of the hunters at night, but it will work against scavengers that might wake you up, so you should keep it on you at all times and be careful about letting anyone know you have it. If you don't want this amazing gift for some reason, then you can always give it to a friend!" ]

If I'm to be honest... In a way, I hope that this time we're right. I should have died days ago, but instead... ( and despite being spared thus far she really can't be happy about it at all. )

But when it comes time, I'll do it. Thank you Miss Kirigiri. ( she nods with conviction and takes both the gun and the note ) Depending on who's still living after tonight, I'll shoot the person who might help the most.

It would be better if you could say that I stole it from you, but... well I just don't want them to have any reason to mistrust you. I'm still counting on you to win this with everyone else.
