It doesn't have to be anything big - all you'd really have to do is give them something to think about. Make it harder.

So say you left weird notes with riddles that were like clues in various places all over town - places they would be likely to be found? Of course, in our case we would want them to point away from us - give them something to analyze that might actually make it more difficult for them.
