night four; hunter kill
[Around half an hour after the hunters have chosen their kill, a box will appear on the ground filled with an array of butcher's instruments. Kanaya Maryam also appears, unconscious, with her wrists bound behind her back. Critter giggles to itself.]
Remember, the cause of death is blood loss. No cheating, everybody!

[Kanaya almost looks peaceful when she is asleep. Her fangs don't protrude as much, and the dimmer glow on her ordinarily bright white skin leaves her looking almost a soft gray. This doesn't last long as her eyes snap open, eerily bright yellow and buglike, and she thrashes against her bonds for a moment before taking in that she is surrounded by her captors. And it is incredibly obvious who they must be. The wolf pack.]
I'd ask if I were finally having a proper soporlessness nightmare but there's really not a single player in this dreambubble who'd understand that sentence, is there?

[He steps up and looks down at her. He may as well - he is the one who condemned her to this fate by suggesting her at all. ...Even he had to take responsibility for his sins.]
Ms. Maryam.

[She is trying very hard to look unflappably amused and failing entirely.]
I wish I could say I were surprised, Mr. Wayne.

...I found who the Scavenger was tonight. But, make no mistake. I wasn't looking because I'm a Hunter. I was looking because they were an indiscriminate murderer who chopped off a girl's head and then brutally bashed someone to death with a sword.
Likewise, you weren't picked because you voted for me. I don't hold petty grudges. We just decided it would be best for you to go for the time being.

I've gone for the time being before, sir. It's not - not like this. [She tries to make a sweeping gesture at her whole body but it doesn't work out that way because her darn arms are bound so it's more like a dramatic swoop of your head.] It just happens once, you know, and you have to be a very good jadeblooded girl your entire life only for someone cruel to turn out to be your sire! I'm not making any sense at all, am I.
I know I'm not going to get that lucky again. That much became obvious when I was the only visible nonhuman here and the peculiar properties of Prayer's Pass broke my weapons and made me weaker than all of you anyway.
Why do you have all these items with which to dissect me? Is it because I'm an alien? I should arrange a dreambubble with Terezi Pyrope, she could sue you to Echo Side and back for space racism.

Sorry, I can't explain anything. I'm bound by rules too. But, what I said wasn't a lie.
[He glances to the knives. Honestly, he's just glad there are no guns involved.]
Critter decides the method of execution for us. This time is blood loss. There is nothing against you or your kind Ms. Maryam. I've met aliens before and trust me when I say you're one of the nicer ones.
[Which is going to be a problem. How to make her bleed to death specifically and make that the cause of death alone. ...He'll have to hit her in the non-vital areas, but she's an alien. He has no clue what vital areas her species has.]
no subject
I'm also sorry that method will take a good deal longer than you might expect given my species. [Jade blood. She never thought she'd be upset over being that high on the hemospectrum.] I'll try not to scream excessively. That would ruin the video. I should probably be thinking of ways to implicate you given that filming will be going on... [Sudden flashbacks to what happened with Vriska and Tavros tbh. Can she write? Would that get filmed? It's probably worth a try...]

Don't worry. I already know a way to do it fast and without you being able to talk.
[He walks over to the collection of knives and picks the thinnest and longest one he could find. He needs a clean cut for it and to make sure he doesn't hit any possible vitals while doing so. He walks over behind her and puts a hand over her eyes.]
I'm sorry for this.
[And, with a cold efficiency, he takes the knife and quickly dashes it against her throat in a perfect horizontal cut. Not deep enough to hit anything she may have there, but deep enough that she'll begin to bleed out and fast. Not to mention being rendered without speech through it all.
This was a line he never wanted to cross. He thought of Todd briefly and wondered if he would laugh at him. "Look at you now" he would probably holler. He felt like a monster. But, that's what this "game" is about. Being a monster.
So, let it be.
He doesn't move from his spot as it's done either. His hand holds over her eyes and he watches everything happen from behind her. It was sick, but he had to watch. To look at what he had done.]

Then blood, of course, pouring from the wound. Too much of it, by human eyes, and in accordance with the alien stereotype, instead of the scarlet everyone expects, it's a bright deep jade green. The same she wrote her notes in. Texted her wigglerhood friends using. Wore on some of her clothes. All past tense.
(She could steal his scarf instead of her cape to patch up this wound, if she were lucky this time. But she's not.)
And at some point, longer than one might hope for but not too much so thanks to Bruce's efficiency, the lights go out. Literally. Her skin loses its light entirely and is entirely unglowing gray. Were one to force open the lids of her eyes, which have been fluttering a lot under Bruce's hand but settled closed in death, they would also find a softer yellow-orange shade rather than the bright yellow headlamps she boasted before.
Here, have a picture of her canonical death just for a general idea of how horrible this is.]

[Edward hasn't said a single word until just now, only watching silently as the Caped Crusader carries out the act and takes what the Riddler's sure is his first life.
In another day, another age, he might have found it amusing. Might have chortled and laughed, taunted the Dark Knight for stepping down off that decrepit old pedestal he always put himself so high upon and bringing himself down to their level. But the truth is, there's hardly anything to laugh about here. This isn't the Dark Knight standing before him.
All he sees is a poor old man that's been forced off that pedestal, forced to compromise, forced to break, no thanks to Critter and this little game of his.]

Don't you dare act like you know me. You know nothing and not half as much as you think you do, Riddler.
[He's not an idiot. He knows Edward is aware of his identity. But so what? Edward Nigma is a figment of the past to him. Just like Damian is. Unlike Damian, who he cares for and dearly loves, he feels nothing but disgust and spite to Edward Nigma. He doesn't care for morals anymore. Too many people have died and he just added to the body count.
He has to win this game. There is no option in his mind anymore. When all is over he will make amends and atone for the rest of his days. But, that can only happen if the Hunters win this twisted thing called a game.]
no subject
Oh, so you do remember. Could've fooled me. [He snorts.] In that case, then... Question: Who are you supposed to be? Hmm? Because you seem to have forgotten.
no subject
I'm Bruce Wayne. [It was the truth. As much as he didn't like it...that was who he was. Who he turned back into.] I'm not the person you knew. Not anymore. Things change and so do we. Don't ever forget that.
[He waits until Kanaya's body is with life no more before stepping away from her and walking to the rest. But, he stops by Edward's side and speaks again, softer.]
Have you changed, Edward? I wonder that as well...
no subject
But that doesn't change the fact that Edward has a family now. Surely the old man's noticed that. And yet...
And yet that family of his wasn't enough to break him of his compulsions, just this once, as the game continued on. He's lied to them. Deceived them. Manipulating Ema now just as he had back when he was still a criminal. In that case, can he really say he's changed...? ] ...I doubt I would, either.

[He never asked to be put on a pedestal. He was just a man fighting a war all his life. Now, he's fighting a new war. One he will have to pay for at the end, but for the time being he'll fight it.
With that, he walks away from Edward.]

WOW SHE WAS SO DISTRACTED BY SEEING BRUCE HERE AND HIM COMING UP TO MURDER HER THAT SHE FORGOT ABOUT THE OTHER GUY SHE SUSPECTED!!!
That's totally Mr. Nigma!! That's the guy whose son would die for him! And he's right here in the pack too! That is definitely his adult human male voice for which she scoured the tapes with Kirigiri! The guy whom Ciel and Joshua and Charles knew of and didn't exactly think innocent on that basis! Aw, man, and she missed her chance to say "Dying in the place of someone I love or rather like as much as possible given the circumstances" about her too! That was probably safer, though, a remark like that could have made these bastards want to target her next and she has to live. Dear sweet precious brilliant human detective girl. She has to succeed where Kanaya could not have.
Dammit, she should have tried harder today - she wasn't wrong about everything after all - maybe he would have been lynched instead of Wigglerpupa, if only she hadn't been weaker.
All that she actually does, though, given her generally helpless situation, is turn her head in Edward's general direction as best she can with Bruce's hand covering her eyes and give him a harsh nonvoiced attempt at a hiss with all four of her fangs bared.]
