With night's fall, the television broadcasting everything happening in town turns off; even the ghosts will have to be kept in suspense over who will be joining them come morning. A list appears on the table in front of the TV with a ballpoint pen lying next to it.

What will it take? Are... Is it just something we personally find important?

Yup! You can pick what you want to give up, but don't try to cheat me because I'll know.

Is it only intangible things? Or could we give up something more... solid?

Umm...as long as you have it on you and it means something important to you, it'll work! I guess I could go to your home and take something, but I don't think that really counts since you're never gonna see it again.

[ He falls quiet for a moment, taking stock of what he has. What's precious to him. There isn't much, not any more. ]

I... I have some things, from my wife. A letter, and a picture. Would one of those work?

[ They're the only physical evidence of her he has left. ]

Oh gosh, you mean of Mary? It would! But maybe you want to talk to your fellow ghosts first before giving up something that big. And I want the real letter, not the fake one.

Fine. Do we all have to give something up, or does it not matter? Could it just be one of us?

[gamehead]

One person can unlock one area or item, but no more!

Well, there's going to be a lot more of you guys coming here soon, you know? I wouldn't want them to have nothing to do. Umm...but I guess if it looks like the game might be wrapping up soon, I could let you unlock more than one thing at a time.

I think we shoul open the jail. I... I can give up my letter.

You sure? This letter's supposed to be like, some big deal to you? [Or at least Critter thought so anyways.]

In the letter..? It's just... Nothing, really. Just a note from my wife.

If it's nothing why's it so important?

It's all I have left of her.

...and you're okay with giving it up?

No. But I will.

[Poland can't help but feel like everything about this guy is just totally...melancholy. It's depressing.]

I guess since you're giving it up it's like, only fair you get to pick what you want. So if that's really what you want I'm okay with picking the jail.

[Poland's not gonna try to convince him otherwise. It's not like he wants to pony up something in James' place or anything.]
